Speak English with them. Very less people understand Hindi in south especially Tamil Nadu. I believe you learned Basic English in school. Keep your Hindi proudness above Vindhya Range.

In 1972 I went to Delhi to attend a trade fair . I found almost all northerners could speak English then , but refused to speak to me in English but only in Hindi .....Which as a Malaysian I did not understand ( but I did pick up enough to go by within a week as there are a few common words between Tamil and hindi) I queued up in Delhi railway station to buy a train ticket to madras .......when my turn came the counter clerk a Sikh refused to attend to me as I spoke to him in English . He attended to the guy at the back of me . Annoyed I took out my Malaysian passport and showed it to him and shouted that I don’t speak your f.....g language . Only then he attended to me speaking in perfect English.
